Whitewater Kayaking

Downloads:  Kayaking Waiver

                      Individual Scholarship Application

Our kayaking program is designed specifically for youth with no previous whitewater kayaking experience. We specialize in quality whitewater kayaking instruction in the Spokane area. Kayaking is a very specialized sport and if there are youth that would like to learn, we are here to teach them. Whitewater kayaking is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and its creator. Our guides are ACA Whitewater Kayak Instructor certified.

Goal:

To introduce the sport of whitewater kayaking and teach the basic techniques for safe paddling.
Requirement: To take this course you should be in good physical condition and have an interest in paddling.

Topics to be covered:

After introducing the sport and the equipment, we will get our first taste of the boats in flat water where we can practice exiting and leaning the kayak, and learn the basic strokes, including sweep strokes, forward strokes, draws, and braces. Once you are comfortable in the boat, we will head to moving water where we will introduce river maneuvers such as the eddy turn, peel out, and ferry. On the second day we will continue to work on river maneuvers, and we will end by running a several-mile-long, class I-II section of river.

Typical Timeline:

The usual class time lasts for 2 hours. Day 1 instruction begins with dry land session covering gear, clothing, equipment, river safety and hazard detection. You will spend time on flat water learning or fine tuning paddling strokes. Day 2 instruction covers paddling strokes, wet exits, self rescue and the Eskimo roll. You will usually paddle a section of whitewater. If you have any physical limitations please contact us.
