Portland
Peak 7 Comes to Portland!
We have the amazing opportunity to take over Discovery Outfitters. They have been around for 18 years and have a great history of serving youth groups. We are looking forward to adding the ability to serve youth that come from less fortunate background. In order to accomplish this we need the help of additional supporters. Individuals and corporations that would be willing to give of their resourses to make this happen.
Through extreme adventure, Peak 7 brings hope and valuable life-skills to the at-risk and homeless youth of Western Washington. Regardless of the background of our participants, we aim to meet kids where they are and help them move forward from where they stand. Whether it is fear, insecurity, addiction, or shame, our outdoor programs provides the gear, the venue, and the support for kids from any background to overcome the obstacles they face.
If you are interested in learning more about what we do or how you can get involved, email us at portland@peak7.org.
We look forward to having you join us!
Discovery Outfitters
Discovery Outfitters began as a ministry of Outreach Northwest (ORNW). ORNW founder, Larry Syme, had a burden to help rural churches reach youth with the good news of Jesus Christ and to see them grow in their Christian faith. Outreach Northwest grew rapidly, developing innovative programs such as Youth Missions in Action (YMIA), Cross-Training, and High Cascade Adventure, the forerunner of Discovery Outfitters. Outreach Northwest ministered to over 18,000 children and teens and saw God’s blessing with over 1,250 finding hope for the very first time in Jesus Christ.
In the late 1990s, property was purchased in Prineville, Oregon with the intention of developing a resident youth camp. When permits could not be secured from the county, the property was sold. At that time, ORNW’s most viable and growing program was High Cascade Adventure, the outdoor adventure ministry that focused on whitewater rafting, rock climbing and mountain biking.
In 2003, following a period of organizational evaluation and prayer, a new, more focused mission statement was adopted and the ministry was “re-born” with a new name: Discovery Outfitters.
In 2008 Discovery entered into a partnership with Canby Grove Christian Camp & Conference Center in Canby, Oregon to provide their adventure-based programs. In 2009 that partnership was formalized with the merger of Discovery Outfitters into Canby's organization.
In 2010, Canby asked us to take over Discovery and so Discovery Outfitters became a division Peak 7.
Get Involved
As we are launching in Portland, there are great opportunities to get involved with Peak 7 to reach the youth of the greater Portland area. We are in need of summer staff, guides, volunteers, etc. Depending on the position, you can volunteer 40 hours a week, or three, but if you have a heart to reach kids in the Portland area, we want to be the conduit to allow you to get involved. In addition we are in need of gear donations, warehouse and office space. If you would like to be involved in Peak 7 in any capacity or to donate, please call the office (503) 928-7757, or email: aj@peak7.org.
