Backpacking/Mountaineering Guide (Inexperienced)

Peak 7 Backpacking guides work with lead guides by assisting with backpacking and mountaineering trips in the Olympics and North Cascades for our Spokane and Seattle area programs. This position does not require previous technical experience. We are looking for individuals with experience leading, teaching, or engaging youth and young adults in various environments. You will be trained in Leave No Trace, backcountry camping, and multi-day backpacking skills, and will go through our Wilderness First Responder course.

Job responsibilities include assisting in teaching participants backcountry skills, leading group discussions, and facilitating Leave No Trace practices, risk management, and decision making. You will also supervise client gear check out and check in, and manage food preparation and shared gear and equipment.

Season Commitment: Full time, June 1, 2020-August 31, 2020 (End date flexible)

Compensation: $0 – $900 stipend, depending on leadership experience, with the option to fundraise support with the help of Peak 7. Wilderness First Responder Course and Wilderness Instructors Course. Food and housing provided.

Backpacking Guide Requirements:
  • Commitment to Jesus Christ reflected in your life
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Washington State Food Handlers Permit (Reimbursed by Peak 7 Adventures)
  • Physically fit with the ability to hike and climb long distances in all weather conditions while carrying 40 lbs or more.
  • The ability to handle the physical, mental, and emotional challenges of working with clients and fellow guides in difficult terrain, poor weather, and for extended periods of time
  • Doctor’s physical within the last two years

  • Reading “Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills” book prior to start of season
  • Adaptable and flexible with last minute schedule and itinerary changes
  • Hard worker who can self-manage and start projects
  • Respect and understanding for the highly diverse cultures and populations we serve
